Early Schooling in Sialkot:

 * Iqbal began his formal education at a mosque, where he learned to read the Quran. This early exposure instilled in him a deep understanding of Islamic scripture, which significantly influenced his later poetry and philosophy. He himself stated that his poetry was primarily an elucidation of the Quranic message.

 * At the age of five, he became a student of Syed Mir Hasan, a distinguished scholar of religion and literature who headed a madrasa (religious school) in Sialkot. This teacher played a pivotal role in shaping Iqbal's intellectual trajectory.

 * Mir Hasan provided Iqbal with a thorough grounding in the rich Islamic literary tradition and helped him cultivate a refined literary taste. He was an accomplished scholar with knowledge of several Islamic languages.

 * Iqbal held his teacher in high esteem. There's a well-known anecdote where Iqbal picked up Mir Hasan's shoes as a mark of respect.

 * Later, Iqbal attended the Scotch Mission College in Sialkot, where he studied modern subjects and started composing poetry around the age of 15 or 16.

 

 * When the British Governor of Punjab proposed to knight Iqbal in recognition of his literary achievements in 1922, Iqbal requested that Mir Hasan also be awarded a title.

 * To the governor's remark that Mir Hasan had not authored any books, Iqbal famously replied that he, Iqbal, was the book Mir Hasan had produced.

 * In recognition of his scholarship, Syed Mir Hasan was awarded the title of Shams al-'Ulama' ("Sun of the Scholars") by the British Crown.
